7 Tips For Taking Photos as a Solo Traveler

📸 First things first, you cannot care what people think. I know no one wants to show up on influencers in the wild, but the reality is, getting the shot often means looking silly- especially if you’re a solo traveler! Let it go and remember the results will be worth the few awkward looks you get!
📸 Get yourself a lightweight, but sturdy, portable tripod. I have one for my big cameras, but I also have a great one for my phone that can be used as a tripod or selfie stick – this is a game changer.
📸 A remote! Avoid having to take one shot at a time with a timer. Purchase a physical remote, or if you’re shooting with your camera, use your phone as the remote! Apps like Canon Camera Connect allow you to sync your camera to your phone and view shots as you’re taking them!
📸 Scope out locations ahead of time! Use Instagram as your inspiration and get an idea of the types of shots you’d like to take before you leave for your trip. Research the best time of day, how to get there and if it’s safe to go there by yourself!
📸 Practice, Practice, Practice! It’s easy to step in front of the camera and blank on what to do- especially when people are staring at you. I love to practice poses and camera settings before I leave for a trip, that way I don’t freeze up in the moment!
📸 Be aware of your surroundings! Don’t get caught up in the moment and loose track of lenses, bags and other valuables. Carry only what you need with you, and make sure to keep an eye on your gear at all times. No photo is worth getting your wallet or passport swiped!
📸 Hire a local photographer! This can be a fun way to take the pressure off you and get some of those creative photos (like action shots) that might be more difficult for you to take on your own- I think this is especially true for cities and other locations where setting up a tripod might be in the way of other people. If you’re a travel creative, this is also a good way to get content (of you) for reels! Just make sure to research the photographer ahead of time- read reviews, confirm they’re legit and always have a contract that details deliverables, payment method, etc.
